A child’s first dental visit
Children’s dentistry is one of the doctor’s main areas. A few tips so the first experience is a good one.
From what age?
First visit when the first tooth appears or by the first birthday; then every six months.
Preparing your child
Talk about the dentist in simple, positive words; don’t bring up “pain” or “needles”.
A morning slot, or a time when your child isn’t tired or hungry, works best.
Bring a favourite toy or teddy.
Stay calm yourself — children pick up on it.
At home
Under 3: a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste. Ages 3–6: a pea-sized amount.
Brush twice a day, especially at night before bed.
Don’t put your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
Keep sweet drinks and snacks to mealtimes.
