Root canal treatment

For a tooth whose nerve is inflamed or infected. Sometimes done in one visit, sometimes two.

90 min

What happens

  1. The tooth is numbed; the inflamed or infected nerve is removed and the canals cleaned and filled.

  2. Afterwards the tooth usually needs a strong filling or a crown.

Afterwards

  1. Don’t eat until the numbness wears off.

  2. Mild pain or tenderness for a few days is normal; take painkillers as directed on the pack or by the doctor.

  3. Until the final filling or crown, don’t bite hard things on that side — the tooth can crack.

  4. Swelling, fever or pain that keeps getting worse: call the same day.
